If you have a child who struggles to understand what others are feeling or thinking, you’ve probably already heard about Theory of Mind. But what exactly does it mean, and how can you help at home?

What is Theory of Mind?

Theory of Mind is the ability to understand that other people have thoughts, feelings, and perspectives different from our own. Most children develop this skill around 4-5 years of age. In children with autism, ADHD, or social developmental delays, this process can be slower and requires additional support.

Signs that a child has difficulties with Theory of Mind

  • Doesn't understand why a friend is sad or upset
  • Takes things literally and doesn't grasp irony or jokes
  • Has difficulty with role-playing or putting themselves in someone else's shoes
  • Doesn't anticipate others' reactions

How to practice Theory of Mind at home?

The good news is that this ability can be developed through structured and repetitive activities:

  • Social stories – read short stories with your child about social situations and discuss what each character feels
  • Role-playing games – simulate real-life situations (at the store, at the doctor's, in the park)
  • Specialized worksheets – visual and structured exercises help the child recognize emotions and understand others' perspectives
  • Guided questions – after a movie or a book, ask: How do you think the character feels? Why?
